Lenny and Martha, a joyful couple unable to conceive, decide to hire Sandra as a surrogate to carry their baby. The long-awaited day arrives, and they prepare their living room with decorations, eager to meet their new family member. However, when Sandra arrives, they are taken aback to find she has no baby with her. To their astonishment, Sandra tells them she has decided to keep the baby for herself, leaving Lenny and Martha powerless to alter her decision.
Martha is overwhelmed with emotion upon receiving the news, feeling panicked and unable to find comfort. After all the time and effort they have invested in supporting Sandra, she can’t understand why Sandra would jeopardize their lives. In contrast, Lenny takes a more pragmatic approach, trying to reason with Sandra by offering her various incentives. However, Sandra remains unmoved, as Lenny and Martha cannot provide her with what she truly desires: a family of her own. This realization sparks an idea in Lenny’s mind—maybe he and Martha could actually give Sandra the family she longs for.
Lenny presents Sandra with an unconventional and compelling proposal: why not move in with them and become part of their family? This way, she would always be involved in the baby’s life. While Sandra finds the idea appealing, she is concerned that it might not be a fully equal arrangement. She fears she could end up merely serving as a housekeeper rather than being treated as an equal with Lenny and Martha. However, Lenny and Martha assure her of their commitment to this new family dynamic and promise to demonstrate it immediately by sharing the same level of intimacy they typically reserve for themselves.
